Two HX series road rollers compact a road surrounded by green landscape

Sustainable compaction technology

For many years, HAMM has been developing fuel-efficient machines and machine control systems that ensure an efficient and, in turn, resource-conserving and zero-emissions workflow on the construction site. This has already enabled HAMM to dramatically reduce noise, fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions. Read on to find out more about some of the most important solutions and components in this regard.

Electric rollers

HAMM heralded the arrival of the e-machine era in 2022 with eight fully electric tandem rollers. The vibration or oscillation unit is driven by electric means only, using specially designed synchronous motors. As a result, the efficiency rating more than doubles and the energy demand decreases accordingly too. Even the drive motor and steering motor are electrically operated. When combined with the powerful battery (23.4 kWh), there is enough energy for a typical working day.

All e-components require no maintenance and offer impressively high torque. The power is always available to deliver peak performance whenever it is needed. Furthermore, a large portion of the braking energy is fed back into the system by means of regeneration.

HAMM has fine-tuned every aspect of the electric rollers to conserve resources. The models feature an automatic motor stop as standard. This deactivates all functions when the machine is idling to save battery capacity. In ECO mode, the control limits the driving speed to 5 km/h. This also saves energy, as does the LED lighting that is fitted as standard.

Smart Compaction

Thanks to Smart Compaction, HAMM is able to offer a range of systems to support compaction. This includes solutions for comprehensive monitoring, documentation and quality assurance during compaction. There are also various integrated assistance systems for automatically selecting the compaction parameters and for regulating the compaction energy. With these systems, the quality of the compaction increases while the number of double passes decreases. As a result, fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions go down.

Within asphalt construction, the ‘Smart Compact’ compaction assistant automatically switches the rollers to ECO mode as required. This reduces the fuel consumption by up to 15%. In earthworks, Smart Compact controls the amplitude at which the drum vibrates, thereby lowering fuel consumption.
