E-roller compacting the sub-base

Public transport infrastructure project in Los Angeles

Skanska deploys an all-electric tandem roller for the extension of the Purple Line

Los Angeles | CA: Skanska, a leading project development and construction company, is piloting zero local emission compaction on its Purple Line (D Line) subway extension project in Los Angeles with the battery-powered HD 12e VV. The 2.7-tonne tandem roller is one of only five models currently in use in North America. It is one of the very first all-electric tandem rollers to be deployed on an ongoing construction project in the USA.

The battery-powered, all electric tandem roller is designed to deliver compaction performance identical to that of its comparable diesel-engined counterpart. Skanska is currently employing the roller for the compaction of the sub-base and crushed aggregates at the Fairfax subway station. In the course of this pilot project, the contractor will be evaluating the performance, durability, sustainability, and the acceptance of the machine on the part of the operating personnel on this ongoing project.

The HD 12e VV was provided by Sunbelt Rentals and is the second all-electric machine Skanska is evaluating in a pilot trial on its public transport infrastructure project for the extension of the Purple Line (D Line).

“Skanska is proud to be one of the first construction companies to be given the opportunity to test the electrified roller together with Hamm. The pilot serves as an important steppingstone in the evolution of lower-emission construction practices while aligning with Skanska’s commitment to a more sustainable future,” said Mason Ford, director of sustainability and equipment services for Skanska USA Civil. “Through participation in pilots like these, we have the opportunity to learn how we can further advance sustainable innovation and the electrification of equipment on construction job sites.”
