Sustainable compaction with digital-ready machines
Hamm is launching four new articulated tandem rollers for the Chinese market. The newly developed models of the HD Series with operating weights of 13 t and 14 t stand out with their spacious operator’s platform, efficient MEE IV-compliant diesel engines, and highly productive compaction systems featuring vibration and oscillation drums.
Equipped with state-of-the-art engine technology, the HD 138i and HD 148i rollers comply with the latest Chinese emission standard MEE IV. The Cummins 125 kW 4-cylinder diesel engine is fitted with a DOC catalyser and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to reduce particulate emissions. The cooling system also meets the demands of the toughest job site conditions, ensuring that the roller can be operated safely in outside temperatures of up to 53 °C. At the same time, the load-dependent fan control system for engine cooling saves fuel and reduces noise emissions. All four models come factory equipped with the Hammtronic machine management system as standard. This technology optimises performance while reducing fuel consumption by up to 20% by operating the engine in the optimum load range at all times. In addition, Hammtronic also ensures even, high-quality compaction through control of the traction and vibration drives. The combination of Hammtronic and modern engine technology also increases overall performance compared to previous models.
Hamm has a long tradition of providing maximum operator comfort and simple, unambiguous user guidance. The HD series tandem rollers offer a modern working environment. The vibration-isolated operator´s platform and the cabin offer 30% more space compared to previous versions. The comfortable seat can be swivelled in both directions and moved longitudinally. Optionally, the cabins can be equipped with an air conditioning system with or without powerful heating. The machines can also be equipped with a foldable protective roof.
From the comfortable cabin, drivers have an outstanding view of the drum, the drum edges, and the water sprinkling system as well as the surrounding job site. The dashboard, the steering column, and the drive lever are connected to the driver's seat to form a seat operating unit. This way, the operator always has the dashboard in view, even when moving or swivelling the seat. An optional rear-view camera ensures even greater safety, allowing the operator to check for the presence of people or obstructions in the area immediately behind the roller at any time via a 5.6’’ display.
The new rollers offer a perfect interplay between articulated joint, even weight distribution, the 2,140 mm wide vibration and oscillation drums, and the powerful water sprinkling system. A speedometer is included on board as standard in the HD series. In vibration mode, the operator can choose between two frequencies (43 Hz and 60 Hz) or two amplitudes. When working at 60 Hz, homogeneous compaction is ensured even at high driving speeds. The possibility to adjust the frequency allows the compaction of different types of asphalt and gravel. When reversing, the automatic transmission provides gentle acceleration and braking, playing its part in generating even asphalt layers without bulges or hollows.
The 3-point articulation is one of the key factors in achieving high-quality compaction, as it not only ensures uniform weight distribution across both drums, but also enables a very small turning radius along with exceptional driving comfort. In addition, thanks to the low centre of gravity in combination with the 3-point articulation, the rollers of the HD series also provide great resistance to tipping even in tight curves.
The new tandem rollers also come with a track offset that has been increased by 70% compared to the previous HD series models, thereby offering plenty of clearance for clean edge pressing. Moreover, the elevated side plates provide plenty of lateral clearance for compaction along walls and edges. This allows areas to be compacted to a high standard right up to the edge. For the finish, the edge pressing and cutting equipment can be supplemented with numerous pressing rolls and cutting wheels.
With a large water tank (1,145 l) and a large diesel tank (240 l), all new models are equipped for long working days, enabling a full shift to be completed without the need to stop for refilling, which in turn means increased productivity. The water sprinkling system comes with a second water pump to provide maximum availability. In addition, the water delivery intervals are pre-set on the dashboard and can be modified by means of a switch. An indicator in the display keeps the driver constantly informed about the residual volume of water in the tank.
The new HD series tandem rollers are also able to transmit various process data such as the compaction values or asphalt temperature to other systems via defined interfaces. They can also be equipped with a telematics interface to process data in fleet management systems. This feature can be used, for instance, for remote monitoring, for determining location, and for theft protection. Solutions for continuous compaction control with easy export of the process data to common documentation systems are also available as an option.
