Project on Big Island

The MOBICAT MC 110i EVO2 Crunches Its Way through the Hawaiian Blue Rock

On Hawaii’s main island, Big Island, contractor Goodfellow Bros. is using a MOBICAT MC 110i EVO2 jaw crusher for the production of aggregate to be used when laying over 5,000 ft of wastewater sewer pipe. The sewer pipe is set to run from the town center, across the highway, and connect to a new residential development. The particular challenge: crushing the hard volcanic rock - Hawaiian Blue Rock.

Powerful Performance in Hard Volcanic Rock

Big Island is the largest of the Hawaiian Islands and is home to two of the world’s most active volcanoes - Kilauea and Mauna Loa. The properties of the lava from eruptions varies from rocks containing gas bubbles and jagged edges to extremely dense and hard basaltic rocks from the cooled interiors of lava flows. The Hawaiian Blue Rock is a hard basalt with a shiny bluish tint which is in high demand due to its exceptional quality, but it is particularly hard to crush. For this project, Goodfellow Bros. required a particularly durable, dependable, and powerful crusher that could meet these stringent requirements. The Kleemann MOBICAT MC 110i EVO2 mobile jaw crusher was the ideal choice for the contractor.

“We crush material every day. And the crushers we used in the past soon gave up the ghost when faced with this material. But that never happens with the Kleemann crusher. The machine definitely takes the challenges in its stride.”

High Machine Utilization Rates

Goodfellow Bros. crushed the Blue Rock to produce aggregates for the sewer construction project in two grain sizes: 3/4” minus for the base course pipe cushion and 4” minus for backfill. With its high output per hour, the new-generation EVO2 mobile jaw crusher from Kleemann is particularly cost-efficient and designed to deliver an optimal material flow. Its multi-stage overload system selectively detects and automatically regulates overload situations caused by excessively hard materials. This increases machine utilization rates.

“You usually hear it when a machine quits crushing for lack of power. But, when it comes to the machine from Kleemann, everything just flows straight through.”

The Crushing Crew Really Appreciates the Easy Handling

The quality and rugged reliability of the machine impressed the crew from Goodfellow Bros. Machine operator Bully Fergerstrom particularly emphasized the user-friendly functions like the Continuous Feed System (CFS) and the intuitive operating concept that guides him through the process workflow on the project site. “I like the functions. They make sure I can do a good job. The user-friendly display guides me through the process and shows me what steps come next to get the machine up and running. Operating the machine is pretty easy.”

Intuitive on-site process guidance – just the thing for operators.

The “Close to Our Customers” Principle Ensures Outstanding Service

Goodfellow Bros. has been in business as a general contractor on the North American and Hawaiian markets for over 50 years. The contractor deployed machines and equipment supplied by Wirtgen Group dealer Papé Machinery Agriculture & Turf on the project – including the Kleemann jaw crusher. What Chris Pulgados likes most about the collaboration with Papé is the high quality of the machines and the outstanding service: “The service they provide couldn’t be better. We’re so lucky to have them nearby. If we call them, it takes them only around five minutes to get here.”

“If you ask me, it’s probably one of the best jaw crushers we’ve had up to now. All things considered, I’d say it’s a very rugged and reliable machine.”
