Challenging noise remediation

SUPER 1900-5i installs noise-reducing surface course

Flowing traffic, strict noise control specifications: In close proximity to Bern, a Highway Class “Dash 5” generation paver renewed a section of the A6 highway between Wankdorf and Muri in Switzerland. Over a total length of 6 km and width of 20 m, a working group from Frutiger AG and Marti AG installed a noise-reducing surface course in several sections.

Traffic reduction and noise control

Traffic jams are a daily occurrence on the A6 near Bern. To improve the flow of traffic and curtail the noise and environmental impact on the densely populated area, measures have been implemented to allow the emergency lane to be used. At peak times, vehicles can then also use the emergency lane as a traffic lane. The aim is to increase capacity while simultaneously improving the noise control. The contracted working group implemented various measures including the removal of noise barriers, the renovation of bridges, and renovation of the emergency lanes. The project also included the installation of a noise-reducing asphalt surface course on all of the carriageways of the approx. 6 km long section.

Paving under difficult conditions

To ensure the disruption to local residents and highway users was kept to a minimum during the construction phase, the work had to be completed as quietly as possible using noise-reducing machines within short timeframes. The flow of traffic in both directions had to be maintained at the same time.

In contrast to the “Dash 3” generation, Vögele has implemented additional noise protection measures and optimized the EcoPlus low-emissions package to such an extent that the SUPER 1900-5i operates at a significantly reduced noise level. The latest generation of the screed plate also generates significantly less noise.

SUPER 1900-5i: Particularly quiet and efficient

To implement the measure as efficiently as possible and to meet the noise control requirements, Frutiger AG opted to use the latest generation of Vögele paver: The SUPER 1900-5i from the Highway Class combined with extending screed AB 500 TV. Despite its high-performance 6-cylinder engine, that even in ECO mode supplies 163 kW at 1,700 rpm, the paver still offers fuel-efficient and particularly quiet operation: In contrast to the “Dash 3” generation, Vögele has implemented additional noise protection measures and optimized the EcoPlus low-emissions package to such an extent that the “Dash 5” machines operate at a significantly reduced noise level. The latest generation of the screed plate also generates significantly less noise. In addition, the SUPER 1900-5i with its refined ErgoPlus 5 operating concept, numerous assistant and automated functions, new comfort features, and an optimized material management system, meets all of the requirements for an efficient and high-quality paving process.

“Due to the strict noise control specifications and high quality requirements, it was important for us to use an efficient paving process that would be interrupted as little as possible. In this context, we were convinced by the convenient adjustment of the pave speed, the large material hopper with a storage capacity of 14 t, and the material management system of the SUPER 1900-5i.”

Matthias Baumann, Road Construction Supervisor at Frutiger AG

Optimized material management for uninterrupted paving

The Highway Class paver installed the 3 cm thick surface course in several sections across a width of 3.2 m each. “Due to the high quality requirements, it was important for us to use an efficient paving process that would be interrupted as little as possible,” explains Matthias Baumann, Road Construction Supervisor at Frutiger AG. “In this context, we were convinced by the convenient adjustment of the pave speed, the large material hopper with a storage capacity of 14 t, and the material management system of the SUPER 1900-5i.” In comparison to the “Dash 3” generation, Vögele has revised the material transport controls. The auger and conveyors now communicate with one another, ensuring that the material feed is even more consistent and precisely coordinated. This avoids load peaks, saves fuel, enables an optimum head of mix, and thus uninterrupted paving.

Hydraulic tamper stroke setting guarantees quality and efficiency

The new AB 500 TV extending screed also ensures a high level of quality and efficiency: In comparison to the previous model, the high-performance heating elements ensure that it is ready for operation even faster. The hydraulic tamper stroke setting is also particularly good at saving time and is practical: “Instead of having to adjust the extender wheels by hand, we could simply set the optimum tamper stroke to 2 mm at the touch of a button using the Dual Power Shift Tamper function, and thus achieve an optimum compaction,” explains paver operator Steffen Horn.

Smart operation accelerates paving process

The team of operators also found that the enhanced ErgoPlus 5 operating concept was another advantage: “The consoles have a logical design and have been implemented very well, the displays have an anti-glare design – these are all advantages that significantly simplify the paving process,” explains Horn. In comparison to the “Dash 3” variant, the paver operator’s console provides an improved overview, increased comfort, an ergonomic design, and optional touch display. Vögele has simplified the operation of individual functions, improved the design, reduced the headroom in favor of legroom, and integrated a drinks holder and additional storage facilities for smartphones, for example. “As we completed the paving process in several sections, the AutoSet Plus storage function was also very helpful,” explains Horn. It can be used to save paving programs and then retrieve them for the next section at the touch of a button. Process automation not only prevents paving errors, but also increases efficiency.

Asphalt paving with lighting under a bridge

Optimum lighting under bridges: The paving team uses the new Light Package Plus on the “Dash 5” generation. Integrated lighting provides optimum overview during the paving process.

Integrated lighting provides optimum overview

As the paving team also uses the paver under bridges, in tunnels, and at night, the team uses the new Light Package Plus on the SUPER 1900-5i: The LED spotlights are integrated in the canopy and optimally illuminate the entire pave width area around the paver and screed. This means that no additional lights or light balloons have to be transported or mounted. “Lighting at the touch of a button, ensures that working on a site like this one is considerably safer and more efficient,” explains Baumann. “We were able to use the lighting without any effort or wasting any time, for example, if visibility was poor under bridges or in tunnels.”

Successful construction project

The technical development and new features of the Vögele paver contributed significantly to the success of its use on the A6 highway: The quiet yet simultaneously high-performance drive, the optimized material management system, assistant and automated functions, as well as the new lighting concept significantly increased the noise control, efficiency, and safety levels on site.
