Hamm compactors at work on the construction of the Hochbrücke Horb bridge

Smart Doc boosts process reliability

A marvel of engineering is taking shape in Horb in Baden-Württemberg in the south-west of Germany. To relieve the town of through traffic, work began in 2018 to build a 70-meter-high bridge across the Neckar valley. Ensuring the best possible compaction of access tracks and work platforms are two HC 200i compactors from Hamm.

Rauschbart construction area

In the area around the district of Rauschbart, six terraced work platforms and the tracks for the construction vehicles are currently being built at a layer thickness of 45 cm. The terrain is steep and challenging, and the standard of compaction required on the substrate is high; after all, the foundations of the eventual bridge piers will be constructed on these terraces. That’s why the construction company responsible opted for two compactors from Hamm.

Both of the HC 200i machines, one with a smooth drum and one with a padfoot drum, deliver high compaction power to the construction site and can also easily connect via Bluetooth® Low Energy to Smart Doc, the app for comprehensive compaction control and documentation.

Total transparency with Smart Doc

The Smart Doc app from Hamm constitutes a valuable tool for compaction control and documentation in the earthworks sector. By means of a tablet or smartphone, the app provides the driver with a visual presentation of the most important parameters, such as the number of double passes, rigidity values or compaction progress so far. There is the option to collate the data gathered into a report at any time, which can be exported as a PDF and shared. The Smart Doc Connect function also enables process data to be exchanged between multiple machines. This data can then be tracked live anywhere via real-time cloud communication through the browser.

Smart Doc optimizes the work processes

During the work on the Hochbrücke Horb bridge, Smart Doc not only helps by increasing the compaction quality and conserving resources, but it also optimizes and streamlines the working processes on the construction site, by reducing the number of double passes and ensuring a high-quality compaction result overall. As such, the free app meets the minimum requirements for continuous dynamic compaction control.

Smart Doc streamlines the construction processes. The continuous measurement, documentation and visualization removes the need for the operator to perform load bearing tests, which can take a good two hours to complete. This saves not only time but money, too.”

Smart Doc has many useful functions:

  • Create projects as a construction section with layers and materials
  • Connect to the machine (CAN Bus) via Bluetooth® Low Energy
  • Specify target values for rigidity, temperature and passes
  • Live visualization of compaction parameters
  • Simple data analysis and visualization of changes in compaction values
  • Suitable for smartphones and tablets (Android)
  • GPS is scalable
  • Create and send a GPS-based PDF compaction report

Smart Doc Connect:

  • Process data exchange: Machine networking and cloud communication in real time
  • All process data available online

On schedule

The work on the Hochbrücke Horb bridge is largely running on schedule – despite all the rain. The bridge is due to be complete in 2026 – when the locals, and others besides, can breathe a sigh of relief!
