The company group once again confirmed its pioneering role – with 37 world premieres and trailblazing solutions for sustainability throughout the entire road construction process chain.
Joint appearance and a shared motto: At Bauma 2022, the Wirtgen Group and John Deere presented their strategic alignment for the coming years under the motto “The Future of Roadbuilding – Smart. Safe. Sustainable.” A clear focus was set on sustainability, which was a central theme in all areas of the joint appearance at the show. With 97 exhibits, including a total of 37 world premieres, on an exhibition space of around 13,000 square meters, visitors to the booth experienced an impressive showcase of future-oriented products and solutions.
Several examples of the innovative powers of the Wirtgen Group:
“I think cabins in the 1-meter class make very good sense. They keep the operator safer, too. The cameras make the whole concept extremely practical and very safe."
Matthias Spreier, workshop technician, Wagner Erdbau, Germany
“We like also the cab for the milling machines. It is really innovative. In the US, we usually work without a cabin, but it seems that we need to get machines with air conditioning and heating for the young people. This is also important for the compactors.”
Don Clark and Justin Power (Ruston Paving Co., Inc.) with Jeff Cooper (Elliott & Frantz), USA
“The Mini Class-pavers from Vögele make an intelligently thought-out and rugged impression. The add-on parts, the crawler drive, the single-handed operation, the folding hopper, and the augers that can be separately controlled at the left and right – those are all convincing details for me.”
Hendrik Guther, Geiger + Schüle Bau GmbH & Co. KG, Ulm, Germany
“We think the safety features and the very simple operating concept of the Dash 5 pavers from Vögele are really good features. In view of the current lack of skilled personnel, it’s getting more and more important to make operating the machines as easy as possible. The Dash 5 concept is exactly the right response to this problem.”
Tobias Keppler (center), GF Werwie, Germany/Switzerland
“We are extremely satisfied with the KMA 240i. We tested the prototype of the machine with the double trough metering system that’s on display here as an innovation. This plant worked reliably from the start and produces good products. The plant reflects the trend for cutting carbon emissions wherever you can.”
Morton World, Denmark
Electromobility is already firmly established at the Wirtgen Group, whether in the guise of battery-electric powered Hamm tandem rollers and Mini Class road pavers from Vögele, or fully-electric impact crushers from Kleemann.
“Kleemann has always moved with the times in the development of its crushers, and continues to revise and upgrade their technologies and systems. The digitalization of the machines is also ideally implemented. In the foreseeable future, the extraction of materials by quarrying will no longer be a viable option, so, in the long run, we must shift our attention to the increased use of recycled materials. And Kleemann crushers help us to produce them in the high quality we need.”

“I have a stationary plant from Kleemann in operation, but I’m thinking about buying a mobile plant. That’s why I’m taking a closer look at the MR 130i PRO. I like the idea of a diesel-electric drive concept, it brings me a wider range of options. Product quality is just as important though, because, at the end of the day, that’s what our business is all about – we have to produce and deliver excellent products.”
Horst Schneckenbecher from Ernst Schneider GmbH, Stein- und Schotterwerke, Germany, seen here with his wife and daughter.
“We run a TBA 240, so we are familiar with Benninghoven asphalt mixing plants. We’re very impressed by the innovations we’ve seen here at the booth. Most of all that the new burner enables plant users to cut fuel costs and simultaneously reduce CO₂ emissions.”
Mindaugas Trubila, Donatas Deksnys, and Valdas Repecka from production + management at AB HISK, Lithuania
In addition to the individual machines, the company group presented production systems for complete applications in the road construction segment. Here, users benefit not only from the efficient interaction of construction equipment and technical solutions from the Wirtgen Group, but also from the synergies generated in the alliance with John Deere. This also applies to the processing of natural stone and recycling materials, where users can, for example, set up their own production system by combining John Deere wheel loaders with Kleemann crushing and screening plants. The ecological and economic potential of such “teamwork” is enormous – ranging from cold recycling and asphalt recycling, zero-emission applications in urban areas and other sensitive locations, to large-scale rehabilitation measures and small communal projects.
“Our firm uses Kleemann crushers and screens. After seeing the JD wheel loaders, I’d now like to try one out at my firm. The cabin is really good. I was particularly impressed by the all-round vision, the operating concept, and the seat adjustment options. The wide range of adjustment options enables operators of all shapes and sizes to configure a comfortable workplace that meets their personal needs. That’s an important factor for me, because I want my people to sit comfortably and enjoy the benefits of a healthy posture while they work.”
Christian Pröls, Godelmann (quarrying division), Germany
On October 24, with perfect timing for the start of this year’s Bauma, John Deere announced the launch of first two wheel loader models for the German and UK markets. The 744 P-tier and the 824 P-tier wheel loaders impress with high productivity, reliability, and optimal operating comfort and will be distributed through the Wirtgen Group sales network.
The John Deere 744 P-tier and 824 P-tier wheel loader models are now also available in Germany and the UK. They will be offered through the Wirtgen Group sales network.
“Here at the show, it soon becomes very clear that the Wirtgen Group offers a gigantic range of products and services. We were amazed to see what dimensions are possible. The wheel loaders and Graders from John Deere are an ideal addition to their range.”
Manuel Meidele, Gerhard Kölbel, Stefan Wiedemann, Andreas Mayr, Handwerkskammer (Chamber of Crafts and Trades) Augsburg, Germany
“I can see at a glance that my John Deere machines are quality products. The great thing is that if I now buy one of their wheel loaders, I get the service for it and my crusher all from a single source.”
Martin Kunze, CEO, Kies und Sandwerke Könnern, Germany
What effects will increasing digitalization have on sustainability and future developments in the road construction process chain? What digital solutions do the Wirtgen Group product brands already offer to make machine operating easier or document the work on construction sites? Visitors were able to find the answers to these and many other questions about this exciting topic in the “Technology Zone”.
“Digitalization and alternative drive concepts are really important topics for us.”

“The Wirtgen Group is working hard on developing technologies for the future. All the innovations are heading in the right direction. I think the future lies in autonomous working.”
Carl Christian, machine operator from Denmark
In addition, the so-called Operations Center provided a preview of a future in which entire projects and construction sites will be able to be digitally planned, monitored and analyzed. Our aim is to bring customers real added value with the aid of telematics solutions that enable even more efficient realization of their projects.
“Smart Doc is a great innovation, Hamm really thinks about what we need. We use the system, for example, for traversing undeveloped sites to determine the state of the building plot. We also use it as a continuous compaction control (CCC) tool for documenting our performance for our customers and for monitoring our own work.”
Daniel Wiggering, Marvin Melles, and Jan Hövelbrink, Finke Landschaft + Straße GmbH, Germany
The Wirtgen Group is a pioneer in the realization of greater mobility in the road construction process chain. And here, sustainability is one of the mainstays of the overall corporate strategy. Visitors were able to find detailed information about the group’s sustainability strategy on the roof terrace of the Technology Zone. For example, the group’s goals foresee a considerable reduction of emissions in the transportation and operation of machines and all activities at the production facilities and other group sites by 2030. The innovations presented at this year’s Bauma – from the expansion of the product portfolio with electrically-powered models to the range of alternative drive system technologies with low to zero emissions – show that the Wirtgen Group is already paving the way to a sustainable future.
“The companies of the Wirtgen Group have successfully achieved the ideal balance of sustainability and productivity, showing that these two goals are by no means mutually exclusive. In my opinion, sustainable construction is the way to the future. And here is where I find the technological solutions for a sustainable future.”
Luis Fernando Solarte, owner of Grupo LHS, Colombia
